Duty cycle (IEC 60974-1) is the share of a 10-minute window a source can weld at rated current at 40°C ambient — a “400 A @ 60%” machine welds 6 minutes in 10 at 400 A, and its 100%-duty continuous rating is lower. Size to the duty-cycle rating, not the headline amps.
