Fiber laser cutting at a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| What it cuts | Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, galvanised sheet, brass and copper — sheet, plate, and round or square tube on tube models |
| Power range we supply | About 3 kW to 20 kW and above, chosen by your thickest regular job, not the thickest one-off |
| Bed sizes | 3015 (3 × 1.5 m), 4020, 6020, 6025 and large-format beds; open single table or enclosed exchange table |
| Assist gases | Oxygen for thick mild steel, nitrogen for clean stainless and aluminium edges, compressed air for thin sheet at lower running cost |
| How we supply | Against order, configured to your work, with installation, operator training and spare-parts support arranged with the machine |
| First step | Send two or three drawings or sample parts — we arrange a trial cut and a configured quotation |
Choosing the laser power
Buy power for the thickness you cut every week. A machine sized for a rare thick job costs more to buy and to run, while a machine that is too small cuts thick plate slowly with a rough edge. The bands below are a planning guide for production cutting; maximum “it will go through” thickness is higher, but slower and rougher. Final capability depends on the laser source, cutting head, gas and material grade, so we confirm it with a trial cut on your material.
| Laser power | Typical production work | Common buyers |
|---|---|---|
| 3 kW | Sheet up to about 12 mm mild steel and 6–8 mm stainless; very fast on 1–4 mm sheet | Panel, enclosure, HVAC and sheet-metal job shops |
| 6 kW | General fabrication up to about 20 mm mild steel and 12–16 mm stainless | Fabrication job shops, agricultural and material-handling equipment |
| 12 kW | Plate work up to about 25–30 mm mild steel and stainless; high speed on 6–16 mm | Structural fabrication, heavy engineering, earth-moving and crane parts |
| 20 kW and above | Heavy plate 30 mm and above; fastest on mid-thickness plate with air or nitrogen | Shipbuilding, pressure vessels, wind and bridge fabrication |
Indicative only — not a specification. We put the cutting chart for the exact configuration in the quotation.
Machine types
Open single-table machine
One fixed cutting table with the laser gantry above it. Lowest price and smallest footprint. Loading and unloading stop the cut, so it suits mixed job-shop work and lower volumes.
Exchange-table machine
Two pallets: one is cut while the other is loaded, so the laser keeps cutting. The enclosed version contains light and fume and is the usual choice above 6 kW and for production work.
Large-format plate machine
Beds of 6 m to 12 m and longer for structural, shipbuilding and heavy plate, usually with zoned fume extraction under the table.
Tube and pipe cutter
Cuts round, square and rectangular tube and some profiles with chucks that rotate the tube. Replaces sawing, drilling and notching in furniture, gym equipment, frames and trusses.
Sheet-and-tube combination
One machine with a flat bed and a rotary tube attachment, for shops that cut both but not enough of either to justify two machines.
Bevel-cutting head
A 3D head that cuts weld bevels in the same pass, removing a grinding or machining step on plate that will be welded.
What a complete installation needs
The quotation should cover everything needed to cut on day one, not only the machine:
- Laser source, cutting head and CNC controller — the three parts that decide cut quality and service; ask which make and model each one is.
- Water chiller sized to the laser power, and a voltage stabiliser on a three-phase supply.
- Compressed air with a refrigerated dryer and fine filters if you plan to cut with air; oxygen and nitrogen supply and regulators for gas cutting.
- Fume and dust extraction under the cutting table — laser cutting produces fine metal fume that must be captured and filtered. See industrial dust collectors.
- Nesting software to arrange parts on the sheet, and operator training on the controller and nesting.
- Consumables — nozzles, protective windows (cover glass) and ceramic rings — and a starter spares kit.
- Floor and foundation to the manufacturer’s layout, with clearance for loading sheet and removing scrap.
Fiber laser or plasma?
| Fiber laser | CNC plasma | |
|---|---|---|
| Best on | Sheet and mid-thickness plate where accuracy and edge finish matter | Thick plate where speed per metre matters more than finish |
| Edge and holes | Narrow kerf, square edge, small accurate holes | Wider kerf, slight bevel, holes need to be larger than plate thickness |
| Running cost | Electricity, assist gas, nozzles and protective windows | Electricity, plasma gas, electrodes and nozzles that wear faster |
| Investment | Higher | Lower |
Many fabrication shops run both: a laser for sheet and accurate parts, and CNC plasma for heavy plate.
How we work with you
- Requirement — materials, thicknesses, monthly tonnage, largest sheet or tube, and available power and floor space.
- Trial cut — send drawings or a sample; we arrange a cut on your material so you see the edge and speed before buying.
- Configured quotation — machine, source, head, controller, chiller, extraction, gases, software, training, warranty and spares in writing.
- Installation and training — installation, commissioning and operator training are arranged with every machine.
- After the sale — consumables, spares and service follow-up from Secunderabad.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a fiber laser cutting machine cost in India?
Price depends mainly on laser power, bed size, table type (open or exchange), the laser source and cutting head, and whether tube cutting or bevel cutting is included. A 3 kW open-table machine and a 20 kW enclosed exchange-table machine are very different investments. We quote after understanding your materials and volumes, with every item — chiller, extraction, gases, software, training and spares — listed separately so quotations can be compared fairly.
How thick can a fiber laser cut?
As a planning guide, a 3 kW machine handles sheet up to about 12 mm mild steel in production, 6 kW about 20 mm, 12 kW about 25–30 mm, and 20 kW and above handles heavy plate of 30 mm and more. The absolute maximum a machine can pierce is higher but slower and rougher. Capability depends on the laser source, cutting head, gas and material, so we confirm it with a trial cut.
Should I cut with oxygen, nitrogen or compressed air?
Oxygen is used on thick mild steel and gives a fast cut with an oxidised edge. Nitrogen gives a clean, bright edge on stainless steel and aluminium and is used where parts are painted or welded without cleaning, but gas consumption is high. Compressed air, properly dried and filtered, is the cheapest option on thin and mid-thickness sheet. Most shops use two or all three depending on the job.
What power supply and space does a fiber laser need?
A three-phase supply with a voltage stabiliser, a water chiller, compressed air or gas supply, and fume extraction. Floor space depends on the bed: a 3015 open-table machine needs far less than an exchange-table or 12 m plate machine. We share the layout and utility requirements with the quotation so the site can be prepared before delivery.
Do you provide installation and operator training?
Yes. Installation, commissioning and operator training on the controller and nesting software are arranged with every machine, and the service and spares plan is confirmed in writing in the quotation.
Can one machine cut both sheet and tube?
Yes — sheet-and-tube combination machines add a rotary tube attachment to the flat bed. They suit shops that cut both but not enough tube to justify a dedicated tube cutter. Shops cutting tube every day are better served by a dedicated tube cutting machine with automatic loading.
