Cleanliness & Condition Targets
Cement dust is abrasive and alkaline, and it is the single biggest cause of premature lubricant failure in a plant. Grade selection matters far less than keeping the dust out and knowing when the oil has stopped working. The targets we work to:
- ISO 4406 cleanliness — hydraulics with servo valves 17/15/12, general hydraulics 18/16/13, gearboxes and circulating systems 20/18/15. Every step of improvement roughly doubles component life, which is why filtration pays for itself before the oil does.
- Viscosity drift — investigate at ±10% from new-oil viscosity at 40 °C. Beyond ±20%, change regardless of what the rest of the report says.
- Water — act above 0.1% (1,000 ppm) in gear and circulating systems; above 0.05% in hydraulics. Monsoon washdown and cooler leaks are the usual sources.
- Wear metals — iron trend matters more than any single reading. A doubling between two consecutive samples is worth a look even when the absolute value is inside limits.
- Sampling discipline — same point, same running condition, same interval. A sample drawn from a cold drain plug tells you about the drain plug, not the gearbox.

High-Ambient Adjustments for South Indian Plants
Plants in the Tadipatri–Anantapur and Yerraguntla belts run through summer ambients well above 40 °C, with radiant heat near the kiln pushing bearing and gearbox temperatures higher again. Three adjustments matter more here than in a temperate plant:
- Do not down-grade viscosity for easier cold starts. The cold-start case barely exists here; the hot-running case is constant. If a gearbox is marginal at ISO VG 320 in May, the answer is usually cooling or a synthetic, not VG 220.
- Grease dropping point is a real constraint on hot-gas fans. Lithium complex thickeners above 250 °C dropping point hold up where a simple lithium soap will not; regrease intervals should halve once bearing temperature passes 100 °C.
- Oxidation life shortens roughly by half for every 10 °C above 60 °C. A gear oil rated for 24 months at 60 °C is a 6–12 month oil at 80–90 °C. That is why kiln drive intervals in this belt sit at the short end of the published range.
