Who Kluthe Are, and What They Actually Make
Chemische Werke Kluthe GmbH was founded in 1950 in Heidelberg and remains family-controlled. The group runs roughly 160,000 tonnes of product a year into 51 countries from 23 German and 39 international bases. Kluthe India Private Limited was established in Pune in February 2022 as a wholly-owned subsidiary, and the India operation concentrates on cleaning, cooling lubricant and preservation products — which is the part of the portfolio most Indian plants actually buy.
The group organises itself into four divisions, and it matters which one your part number sits in, because the buying process is different for each:
- Metalworking & Cleaning — cooling lubricants, industrial cleaners, corrosion protection. This is the bulk of Indian demand and the part we source most often.
- Forming & Protection — forming media for wire drawing, cold heading and sheet metal, plus preservation.
- Pretreatment — surface preparation ahead of painting.
- Paintshop — process chemistry for paint lines, including detackification and stripping.
A plant that says “we use Kluthe” usually means one or two products out of the first two divisions. The rest of the range is rarely what is being asked for.
The Kluthe Ranges, Family by Family
Kluthe name their families rather than numbering them, and the family tells you the process, not the specification. These are the ranges we are asked for.
HAKUPUR — industrial parts cleaning
Water-based cleaners for parts washing, immersion, spray and ultrasonic. The number after the name is a formulation code, not a concentration or a strength rating — HAKUPUR 850 is not “stronger” than HAKUPUR 468, it is built for a different soil and a different substrate. Products we are regularly asked to source:
- HAKUPUR 850 — cast iron, ultrasonic; very low foaming across the working temperature range.
- HAKUPUR 439-1 — mild pH, for sensitive light-metal and aluminium alloys.
- HAKUPUR 468 — free of inorganic and organic salts, for parts going into hardening, where a barrier layer cannot be tolerated.
- HAKUPUR 196-8 — combines cleaning performance with active and passive corrosion prevention.
- HAKUPUR 472-1 — free of non-ionic surfactants, so dragged-in oils separate quickly instead of emulsifying.
- HAKUPUR 56-170 — organic-acid based, very low foaming, rinses residue-free; used on plastics.
- HAKUPUR 700 BF — biostable, formulated for cold applications.
- HAKUPUR 50-706-1 / 50-706-2 — immersion cleaning; the -2 wets and infiltrates quickly, the -1 is aimed at heavier contamination.
- HAKUPUR A 934 — general industrial cleaning.
HAKUFORM — forming and machining media
Drawing, cold heading, threading, stamping and light-metal machining. The sub-ranges do not interchange: a wire-drawing soap and a threading oil are different products doing different jobs.
- HAKUFORM 70-4 OF — drawing emulsion for wire cold rolling and first/second draw; formaldehyde-free and boron-free, supplied ready to use.
- HAKUFORM 90-28 — reactive soap for wire drawing, cold heading and cold massive forming; extends tool and bath life.
- HAKUFORM 90-33 — polymer lubricant for die-box use, a dust-free alternative to dry drawing agents.
- HAKUFORM 20-27 — cold extrusion and threading.
- HAKUFORM 20-45-2 — tapping and deep drilling.
- HAKUFORM 20-895 — threading, including stainless.
- HAKUFORM 50-62 KX — thread grinding, carbon steel.
- HAKUFORM A 835 / A 845, L 420 / L 614, 10-95 — stamping, massive forming and light-metal machining oils.
- HAKUFORM SE 846 — the sustainable-formulation coolant line.
HAKUFLUID — water-miscible and oil-free coolants
Solutions and emulsions for machining steel and cast iron, including mineral-oil-free wet drawing. HAKUFLUID 101, 115, 181 and 182 are the grades we see most. If you are running a HAKUFLUID today, this is the range where a like-for-like substitution is most often possible from lines we hold authorised — see below.
CUSTOS and HAKUDREN — corrosion prevention
Solvent-based and water-based preservation, specified by protection duration indoors, which is the number to quote when you ask us for a price:
- CUSTOS 10-15 — up to about 3 months.
- CUSTOS 40-42 and CUSTOS 70-150 T — up to about 12 months.
- CUSTOS 622 — beyond 18 months.
- CUSTOS 70-74 — widely referenced in the field.
- HAKUDREN 7 MS 17 — grinding oil for steel and cast iron.
Indoor duration figures are the manufacturer's, established under their own test conditions. Indian coastal and monsoon storage is harsher than a European test hall. Tell us where the parts sit and for how long, and we will say whether the grade you are asking for is the one you want.
NIKUTEX — purging media
Purging compounds for injection moulding and extrusion changeovers, NIKUTEX 500 being the commonly requested grade. This sits alongside our injection-moulding spares and service work.
HAKUGUARD — line monitoring
Monitoring for coolant and cleaner lines — concentration, contamination and bath condition. Relevant if you are trying to extend sump life rather than simply buy more fluid, which is the same problem our coolant-management service exists to solve.
What We Stock, What We Source
Being straight about this saves everyone a week.
- We do not hold Kluthe stock. Every Kluthe line item is procured to order. Lead time depends on whether the grade sits in Kluthe India's Pune inventory or has to come from Heidelberg, and we confirm which before you release an order — not after.
- We do hold stock of the lines we are authorised for: Veedol, Balmerol, GS Caltex, SELCO and Castrol industrial. Coolants, cleaners, hydraulic and gear oils out of those ranges dispatch from Secunderabad within 2 working days.
- Where the two overlap — principally water-miscible coolants, neat cutting oils and corrosion preventatives — we will show you both: the genuine Kluthe grade with its real lead time and landed cost, and an equivalent from an authorised line with the classification it meets. You choose. We do not push you off Kluthe to protect a margin, and we do not pretend a substitute is identical when it is not.
How to Ask for a Kluthe Product Properly
Send the exact designation, including the suffix
HAKUFORM 70-4 OF is not HAKUFORM 70-4. HAKUPUR 50-706-1 is not 50-706-2. The suffix is usually the whole difference — oil-free versus not, heavy soil versus fast wetting. If you are reading it off a drum label or an old invoice, send a photograph and we will read it.
Tell us the process, not just the product
Substrate, soil, bath temperature, application method, and what the part goes on to next. A cleaner that is right for cast iron in an ultrasonic tank is wrong for aluminium in a spray washer, and the failure shows up as staining a week later rather than at the machine.
Give us the quantity and the pack
Drum, IBC or can changes the landed price materially on imported chemistry, more than the per-litre rate does. A trial in 20 litres and a plant-wide changeover in bulk are two different quotations.
Say if it is a repeat or a first trial
A first trial should be small, and should come with a comparison of what you are running now. A repeat order we can simply price. Telling us which it is means you get the right answer first time.
Where Kluthe Fits Against What We Already Supply
An honest word, because it will save you money on some lines and cost you performance on others. Kluthe's strength is process chemistry sold with process support — bath monitoring, changeover, sump life. On a plant that is genuinely running to that model, substituting on price alone usually goes badly.
On the other hand, a great many Indian plants specify a Kluthe grade because a machine builder wrote it into a manual years ago, and have never revisited it. If that is your situation, the classification is what the machine needs, not the brand on the drum. We will put the two side by side, with the published data for each, and let you decide with the numbers in front of you.
How We Handle a Kluthe Enquiry
You get the lead time before you commit
Imported speciality chemistry is where lead times surprise people. We confirm availability with the source before we quote a date, and if it moves after you have ordered, you hear it from us with a revised date and the option to cancel.
You get the comparison in writing
If we propose an alternative, you receive the classification, the published properties of both, and a plain statement of where they differ. Not a claim that they are the same.

We would rather sell you 20 litres that works than a pallet that does not.

We are authorised distributors for Veedol, Balmer Lawrie (Balmerol), GS Caltex, SELCO and CITEL. Where you require the genuine Kluthe item we source it to order and say so plainly on the quotation. Can you match a Kluthe coolant with something you stock?
Often, on water-miscible coolants and corrosion preventatives. Send the grade and the application and we will send you the published classification of both, side by side. Whether it is a genuine match depends on the classification, not on the two products looking similar.
What is the lead time on a genuine Kluthe product?
It depends entirely on whether the grade is held in Kluthe India's Pune inventory or has to be brought in. We confirm it before you release the order, in writing.
Do you supply the paintshop and pretreatment ranges?
They can be sourced, but they are not our regular business and we will say so. Our strength is metalworking, cleaning and corrosion protection. If you need paint-line chemistry supported on site, the authorised channel will serve you better and we will point you there.
What is the minimum order?
For a trial, one pack. For imported grades procured to order, the economics change below a certain quantity and we will tell you what that is for your specific grade rather than quote a blanket figure.
