Why data-line SPDs have no Type 1, 2 or 3
Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 come from IEC 61643-11, the standard for surge protective devices on low-voltage power circuits. Signal, data and telecom SPDs are covered by a different standard, IEC 61643-21, which does not use Types at all. It classifies a device by the test category it has been proven against — the impulse waveform and the energy behind it.

A device carrying D1 has been tested against direct lightning current on the line itself. On a data circuit that is the equivalent of what Type 1 signifies on a power circuit — which is why quoting a Type rating for a signal SPD tells a specifier nothing useful, and quoting the category tells them everything.

Two details worth carrying into a specification. DD9-24V is not D1 rated — Citel publishes C2 and C3 for it only, so it should not be relied on where direct lightning current can reach the line. And DLC-06D3 is the monobloc version of DLA-06D3: same categories, but Imax 10 kA and Iimp 2.5 kA against the plug-in module’s 20 kA and 5 kA.
