Long cabling between Type 2+3 SPD and equipment defeats the purpose — inductive voltage drop on the cable adds residual surge that Type 3 was meant to prevent.
How do I size the Type 2+3 SPD for my installation?
Type 2+3 SPDs are sized by In (nominal discharge current, 8/20 µs) and Up (voltage protection level): (1) In ≥ 5 kA for most installations (sufficient since Type 1+2 upstream have already absorbed most of the surge energy); (2) Up ≤ 1.0 kV for PLC + server + IT equipment; Up ≤ 0.6 kV for IEC 60601 medical equipment. What is the difference between Citel DAC, DLU and DLA?
DAC — DIN-rail mount Type 3 for installation inside electrical cabinets (PLC cabinets, sub-distribution boards). DLU — plug-strip Type 3 for direct insertion at equipment power point (server rack PDU, lab equipment, medical devices). DLA — Type 3 for data + signal lines (Ethernet, RS-485, 4-20 mA instrument loops). Most installations need both DAC (power-line) and DLA (data-line) for complete protection of equipment with both power + signal entries.
How often should Type 2+3 SPDs be replaced?
All Citel Type 2+3 SPDs include thermal-disconnect status indicators (window or remote contact) for end-of-life detection.
