Why slideway oil matters
Machine-tool ways move slowly under load. Ordinary oil lets the slide stick and then jump (stick-slip), which shows up as chatter marks and lost accuracy. Slideway oils carry tackiness and friction modifiers so the slide moves smoothly and the oil stays on vertical ways. On CNC machines the way oil also ends up in the coolant tank, so it should separate from water-soluble coolant rather than emulsify into it.

What is slideway oil used for?
Slideway oil lubricates the sliding guideways of machine tools such as CNC lathes, machining centres and grinders. It prevents stick-slip so the slide moves smoothly and accurately, and it clings to vertical ways.
Which viscosity of slideway oil do I need?
ISO VG 68 suits most horizontal ways on CNC lathes and machining centres. VG 220 is used for vertical and inclined ways. Use the grade given in the machine manual.
Can I use hydraulic oil instead of way oil?
Not on the ways. Hydraulic oil lacks the tackiness and friction modifiers that stop stick-slip. Some machines use one oil for both systems; check the machine maker’s recommendation.
Why does way oil end up in my coolant?
The way lubrication unit meters oil onto the slides and it drains into the coolant tank. A way oil that separates from coolant can be skimmed off; one that emulsifies shortens coolant life.
