Cromaweld E308L-16 / Tenkrome 308L
Workhorse stainless electrode — for welding type 304 / 304L parent metal. Low-carbon (≤0.04%) deposit prevents intergranular corrosion in heat-affected zone. Used widely in pharma equipment, dairy tanks, food-processing equipment, light marine fabrication. AWS A5.4 E308L-16.
Cromaweld E316L-16
Molybdenum-bearing stainless electrode — for welding 316 / 316L parent metal. Better chloride and pitting corrosion resistance vs E308L. Standard for pharma pure-steam systems, marine seawater service, chemical plant chloride exposure. AWS A5.4 E316L-16.
Cromaweld E309L-16
Dissimilar-joint electrode — for welding carbon steel to stainless steel, or dissimilar stainless grades. Higher chromium-nickel deposit prevents brittle martensite formation in the dilution zone. Critical for clad-plate fabrication, transition-pieces, structural-to-stainless connections.
Cromaweld E347-16
Niobium-stabilised stainless electrode — for welding 321 (titanium-stabilised) and 347 (niobium-stabilised) parent metals. Prevents chromium-carbide precipitation during PWHT or high-temperature service. Used in petrochemical plants where stainless components face 500-800°C service.
Cromaweld E2209-16 / Duplex
Duplex stainless electrode — for welding 2205 duplex (50% austenite + 50% ferrite). Used in oil & gas pipework, offshore structures, chloride-environment chemical plants. Higher strength + better chloride pitting resistance than 316L. AWS A5.4 E2209-16.
Cromaweld E312-16 & Specialty Grades
E312 — high-ferrite electrode for difficult dissimilar joints (cast iron to stainless, problem repairs, surfacing). E16-8-2 for high-temperature creep service. E317L for very corrosive chemical service. Made-to-order; typical lead time 5-10 working days.
Industries & Applications We Serve
Where stainless steel welding electrodes are most commonly applied — by industry vertical and corrosion environment.
Pharma equipment fabrication

Dairy & food-processing equipment
Milk tanks, pasteurisers, cheese vats, CIP (clean-in-place) piping. 304L standard. Amul, Heritage, Mother Dairy contractors plus food-equipment OEMs.
Marine fabrication & offshore
Seawater piping, offshore platform brackets, ship engine cooling systems. 316L for chloride resistance. Cochin Shipyard, Mazagon Dock vendors plus offshore fabrication.
Chemical & petrochemical plants
Reactor vessels, distillation columns, heat exchangers. Material depends on process (304L general, 316L for chlorides, 321/347 for high-temp, 2205 duplex for oil/gas). Reliance, Tata Chemicals, BASF India fabricators.
Refinery cladding & turnaround
Cladding-overlay repair of refinery process equipment during turnarounds. E309L for transition layers between carbon steel base and stainless overlay. HPCL, BPCL, IOCL refinery T&I contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I use E308L vs E316L stainless electrode?
Use E308L (low-carbon 304/304L composition) for welding parent metals 304 or 304L — typical applications: general pharma equipment, dairy tanks, food-processing, light chemical service. Use E316L (with molybdenum) for welding parent metals 316 or 316L — required for chloride-rich environments (marine seawater, pharma pure-steam, chemical processes containing chlorides). The 'L' grade is essential whenever plate thickness exceeds 3 mm — prevents intergranular corrosion in heat-affected zone via low carbon (≤0.04%) chemistry. Using E308 (non-L) on thicker stainless plates risks sensitisation and corrosion failure.
Why do I need E309L for welding carbon steel to stainless steel?
When you weld carbon steel directly to stainless steel using a stainless electrode (E308L or E316L), the dilution from the carbon-steel parent creates a brittle martensitic zone at the fusion line — prone to cracking under thermal stress or in service. E309L (higher chromium + nickel content than E308/E316) compensates for this dilution and maintains an austenitic structure across the joint. E309L is mandatory for all dissimilar carbon-to-stainless joints, clad-plate fabrication, and structural transition pieces. Always specify in the WPS for dissimilar joints.
Are Ador Cromaweld electrodes ASME Section IX qualified?
Yes. Ador Cromaweld stainless electrodes are widely qualified for ASME Section IX procedure qualifications (PQR) across pharma, chemical, petrochemical and refinery sectors. We supply batch certificates compatible with ASME PQR documentation. Most Indian fabrication shops have approved WPS based on Cromaweld electrodes. Cross-reference your project specification against the Ador product data sheet to confirm specific grade conformance.
Can stainless steel electrodes be welded with the same machine as carbon steel?
Yes — the welding machine (transformer or inverter) doesn't change. However, polarity and current settings differ: stainless electrodes typically run at DC-electrode positive (DCEP) for E308L and E316L, with current 10-20% lower than equivalent-diameter carbon-steel electrodes. Use a clean ground clamp and clean parent metal — surface contamination causes porosity and inclusions in stainless welds. Cool slowly to allow stress relaxation — stainless retains heat 60-70% longer than carbon steel.
Do you supply duplex (2209) stainless electrodes for oil-and-gas pipework?
Yes. Cromaweld E2209-16 is stocked for duplex stainless (2205) welding common in oil-and-gas pipework, offshore structures, chloride-environment chemical plants. Duplex requires careful heat input control to maintain 50:50 austenite-ferrite balance — over-heating creates excessive ferrite; under-heating creates excessive austenite. We provide welding procedure support documentation and recommend specific heat inputs based on plate thickness.
What pack sizes and lead times do you offer for stainless electrodes?
Standard pack: 4 kg or 5 kg moisture-controlled cartons, boxed in 25 kg or 50 kg shipping units. Bulk dispatch direct from our Secunderabad warehouse — same-day for stocked E308L, E316L, E309L common sizes (2.5, 3.15, 4.0 mm); 5-7 working days for E347, E2209, E312 specialist grades. Minimum order: 25 kg for stocked grades, 100-200 kg for made-to-order specials. Annual rate contracts available for recurring requirements.
