How to Cross-Refer a Welding Consumable Properly
The AWS Classification Is the Only Defensible Basis
A welding electrode is interchangeable when it carries the same AWS A5.x classification, because that classification fixes the deposit chemistry, the mechanical properties and the position capability. Trade names tell you nothing. If your WPS calls for E7018, any qualified E7018 satisfies it unless the procedure names a brand, and that is a contractual question rather than a metallurgical one.
D&H Print “SFA”, Ador Print “AWS”
D&H write their classification as “AWS: SFA 5.1 E7018”. SFA is the ASME mirror of the AWS document — SFA 5.1 and AWS A5.1 are the same specification adopted by two bodies. There is no difference in the requirement, and a QA engineer querying it is right to ask but will find they match.
Ador Publish an IS Code. D&H Do Not.
This is the one asymmetry worth knowing. We checked all 345 D&H product pages: they publish AWS/SFA and EN ISO only — no IS or BIS classification anywhere. Ador publish IS 814 on covered electrodes, IS 5206 on stainless, IS 5511 on cast iron, IS 6419 and IS 5856 on wires and IS 15769 on flux-cored. For a PSU tender or a BIS-referenced specification, that is a real procurement advantage and it is worth raising before the bid rather than after.
Watch for “Nearest” and “Modified”
D&H qualify several stainless electrodes on their own pages as “(Nearest)” or “(Modified)” — SECHERON 308L, RUTOX-F(U), BATOX-F(U) and SECHERON 310L among them. That is the maker telling you the product is not fully to class. An equivalence claim against one of those is not defensible in either direction, and we will not make one.
Hardfacing Cannot Be Cross-Referred on AWS
Of D&H’s 22 hardfacing electrodes, only two carry an AWS class — COBALTHERME-6 (SFA 5.13 ECoCr-A) and SUPER-Mn/Ni (SFA 5.13 EFeMn-A). The other 20 publish hardness in prose and no classification at all. On those, the only honest comparison is published deposit hardness against published deposit hardness, with the layer count stated, and that is how we do it.

Class by Class — D&H Product, AWS Class, Ador Equivalent
Mild steel rutile — AWS E6013
D&H publish NORMA, NORMA-S, NORMA-V, NORMA-X, MEDIO, EXOBEL and SUPRA-BOND as SFA 5.1 E6013, with typical tensile 475–490 MPa. The Ador equivalents are Superbond (E6013, IS 814 code ER 4212, 500 MPa typical), Kingbond (E6013, ER 4211, 520 MPa) and Metalbond (E6013, ER 4112). Note the name: D&H’s product is SUPRA-BOND, not “Superbond” — Superbond is Ador’s. The two are easy to confuse on a purchase order and we have seen it happen.
Low-hydrogen basic — AWS E7018 and E7016
D&H’s E7018 is the SUPRATHERME family — SUPRATHERME, SUPRATHERME (MOD) at H5, and SUPRATHERME-R, at 540–545 MPa typical. The Ador equivalent is Supabase (E7018, IS 814 EB5426H3JX, 540 MPa) or Supabase X Plus (E7018, 555 MPa). D&H’s E7016 is INDOTHERME (558 MPa) and INDOTHERME-CS (530 MPa); the Ador equivalent is Tenalloy 16 (E7016, IS 814 EB5426H3X, 560 MPa) or Tenalloy 16W. One point of care: Ador have no product called “Tenalloy 18”. Plain E7018 is Supabase. The Tenalloy name on E7018 appears only on the -1 and -G suffixed grades.
Cellulosic — AWS E6010 and E6011
D&H publish CELLUTHERME as SFA 5.1 E6010 (480 MPa) and CELLUTHERME-AC as E6011 (480 MPa). Ador publish Celwel 60 as E6010 with IS 814 code E C 4210 X (525 MPa) and Celwel 60S as E6011, IS 814 E C 4216 X (520 MPa). Straight swap on class for pipeline root runs and site work on unprepared plate.
Stainless — E308L-16, E309L-16, E316L-16
RUTOX-B (E308L-16, 564 MPa) maps to Ador Superinox 1C (E308L-16, IS 5206 E19.9 L R26, 590 MPa). D&H 309L and SECHERON 309L (E309L-16) map to Betanox DL (E309L-16, IS 5206 E 23.12 L R26). RUTOX-D and RUTOX-F (E316L-16) map to Superinox 2C (E316L-16, IS 5206 E19.12.2 L R26). D&H 312 (E312-16, 832 MPa) maps to Superinox 312 (E312-16, IS 5206 E 29.9 R26, 760 MPa) — note the tensile difference and check it against your procedure. RUTOX-A(ST) (E347-16) maps to Superinox 1B (E347-16, IS 5206 E 19.9 Nb R26).
Cast iron — ENi-CI and ENiFe-CI
D&H NFM is SFA 5.15 ENiCl; Ador Castnickel is ENi-CI with IS 5511 code E Ni G23 and 276–448 MPa published. D&H D&H 1111 CI is ENiFe-Cl; Ador Ferricast is ENiFe-CI, IS 5511 E Ni Fe CC23, 400–579 MPa. Straight swap on class. On thick sections the ferro-nickel is normally the right choice on both sides.
Wires — solid and flux-cored
D&H AUTOTHERME – 1 is SFA 5.18 ER70S-6 — their only ER70S-6. The Ador equivalent is Automig I (ER70S-6, IS 6419 S4-C 504, 570 MPa under CO2 and 580 MPa under 80Ar/20CO2; quote the gas alongside the number). On flux-cored, D&H MAXFIL-12R is SFA 5.20 E71T-1C and Ador Automig FC 71T-1 is E71T-1C with IS 15769 code ET531RC-9, 600 MPa. Stainless FCW needs care: D&H MAXFIL-308L is E308LT0-1 and Ador Miginox FC 308L is E308LT1-1/4. T0 is flat and horizontal only; T1 is all-position. Those are not the same product and we will not present them as one.
Submerged arc
Both makers sell wire and flux separately and publish the combination as an AWS F-number. D&H publish combinations on the flux page — MAXFLUX SAF-4 as F7A2-EM12K and F7A4-EH14 among others. Ador publish Automelt B71 against F7A4/P4-EM12K, F7A4/P4-EH14, F8A2/P2-EA2-A2 and a long list beyond. Cross-refer on the full F-number, not on the wire alone, because the flux determines half of the deposit properties.
What Decides Whether a Substitution Is Acceptable
Your WPS, first and last
If the welding procedure specification names a classification, an equivalent classification satisfies it. If it names a brand, you need a procedure revision or a concession, and that is a QA decision rather than a purchasing one. We will tell you which situation you are in before quoting.
Hydrogen level on low-hydrogen grades
D&H publish SUPRATHERME (MOD) at H5; Ador publish Supabase at IS 814 code EB5426H3JX. H3 and H5 are different diffusible-hydrogen limits and on thick or restrained joints that difference is the whole point of specifying a low-hydrogen electrode. Check which your procedure requires.
Tensile is typical, not guaranteed
Both makers publish a typical tensile and a specified minimum. D&H 312 at 832 MPa typical against Ador Superinox 312 at 760 MPa typical both satisfy the E312-16 minimum. If your procedure sets an actual value rather than a class, quote the minimum, not the typical.
T0 against T1 on flux-cored wire
The most common quiet mismatch in this whole table. E308LT0-1 is a flat and horizontal wire; E308LT1-1/4 is all-position. If your fabrication involves vertical or overhead work, the difference is not academic.
IS 814 coding, when the tender uses it
Ador publish the full IS 814 code — ER 4212 X, EB5426H3X, E C 4210 X and so on — and host the coding chart. Where a government or PSU specification is written in IS 814 terms, that code answers the question directly. D&H publish no IS code, so an IS-written tender needs a translation step that the Ador datasheet removes.
Redrying and storage
Basic low-hydrogen electrodes absorb moisture and the hydrogen number on the datasheet assumes correct redrying. Whichever brand you buy, the storage discipline is the same, and getting it wrong will cost you more than the price difference between any two electrodes on this page.

Send the Designation, Get the Class Comparison
Send the D&H product name from the packet or the procedure and we return the AWS class, the Ador product carrying it, the IS code Ador publish, and the published tensile on both sides. If the classes do not match exactly, we say where.
WPS Review Before We Quote
If you send the procedure we will read it. Whether your document names a class or a brand changes the answer entirely, and finding that out at quotation is cheaper than finding out at inspection.
Trial Packet Before a Full Changeover
Operator feel, slag release and restrike behaviour differ between brands even at identical classification. On a shop running one electrode all day, a trial packet settles that better than any datasheet.
Batch Certificates With Every Despatch
Test certificates, batch numbers and MSDS as standard, which is what decides whether a PSU consignment clears third-party inspection on schedule.
Hardfacing Handled Separately
Because most D&H hardfacing carries no AWS class, we handle those enquiries by matching published deposit hardness with the layer count stated, and by asking what the part actually does — abrasion, impact or both. That conversation is more useful than any table.
We Will Say When Not to Switch
If your procedure is qualified against a named D&H product and requalification is expensive, staying put is the right answer and we will tell you so. A supplier who says that once is worth listening to on everything else.

D&H publish SUPRATHERME as SFA 5.1 E7018 at 545 MPa typical. The Ador product carrying AWS A5.1 E7018 is Supabase (540 MPa typical, IS 814 code EB5426H3JX), or Supabase X Plus at 555 MPa. Both satisfy the same class. Check the diffusible-hydrogen requirement in your procedure — SUPRATHERME (MOD) is published at H5 and the Ador IS code indicates H3.
What is the equivalent of Indotherme?
INDOTHERME is SFA 5.1 E7016 at 558 MPa typical. The Ador equivalent is Tenalloy 16, AWS A5.1 E7016, IS 814 EB5426H3X, 560 MPa typical. Where the application involves welding onto hardfaced or high-carbon base metal, Tenalloy 16 is also the buffer layer Ador recommend under their hardfacing deposits.
Is Ador Superbond the same as D&H SUPRA-BOND?
They are different products from different makers that happen to carry the same class. Both are E6013 — D&H SUPRA-BOND at 490 MPa typical, Ador Superbond at 500 MPa typical with IS 814 code ER 4212. The names are close enough that we have seen the wrong one ordered, so quote the maker as well as the product on the purchase order.
Can you match D&H hardfacing electrodes?
Only on published hardness, and we will say which is which. Of D&H’s 22 hardfacing electrodes, 20 carry no AWS classification at all — the maker publishes a hardness figure in prose and nothing else. So the comparison is CCR at 52–58 HRC over three layers against, say, Ador Zedalloy 550 at 54–56 HRc (540–580 BHN) over three layers. Same duty, comparable hardness, but no shared classification to point at. Tell us the part and the wear mode and we will make a recommendation on that basis rather than pretending a class match exists.
Does D&H publish an IS number?
No. We checked every product page on their site: they publish AWS/SFA and EN ISO classifications only. The single IS reference on the site is for gas hoses to IS 447, an accessory. Ador do publish IS — IS 814 on covered electrodes, IS 5206 on stainless, IS 5511 on cast iron, IS 6419 and IS 5856 on wires, IS 15769 on flux-cored. If your tender is written in IS terms, that is worth knowing at the specification stage.
My WPS names a D&H product by name. Can I still substitute?
That is a QA question, not a metallurgical one. If the procedure names a classification, an equivalent classification satisfies it. If it names a brand, you need either a procedure revision or a written concession from the client or inspection authority. We will read the procedure with you and tell you which case you are in — and if requalification would cost more than the consumable saving, we will say so.
Do you publish D&H prices?
No. Manufacturer price lists circulated to dealer networks are confidential and republishing one would be wrong whoever it belonged to. Send us the classification you need and we will quote our own price against it.
