What it is
A PAO-based advanced synthetic heavy-duty industrial gear oil for severe service — heavy loads at low speed, continuously high or very low operating temperature, and gearboxes where a long drain interval is the point. High resistance to micro-pitting is the property GS Caltex lead with, and it is the one that shows on a tooth flank.
Applications
- Enclosed gearboxes running continuously at high temperature, or exposed to very low temperatures
- Severe service under heavy loads and low speeds
- Systems needing extra-long oil life, such as wind turbines
- Gearboxes that are inaccessible or require infrequent lubrication

When the synthetic is worth the money, and when it is not
GEAR EP S is PAO based, and the sheet is explicit about what that buys: high resistance to micro-pitting, service at continuously high temperature or very low temperature, and extra-long oil life. The numbers back it — viscosity index 148 to 155 against 104 to 112 for the mineral GEAR EP, flash point 276 to 288 °C against 242 to 268, and pour point down to −39 °C.
It is worth it where the gearbox runs hot continuously, where micro-pitting is the failure you keep seeing on the tooth flank, where the unit is inaccessible or rarely serviced, or where a drain interval is being stretched deliberately. GS Caltex name wind turbines as the case in point, and it carries FLENDER Industrial Gear rev. 9 on top of the mineral grade’s approvals.
It is not worth it on a steadily loaded reducer at moderate temperature with a normal drain schedule. There, GEAR EP reaches the same FZG stage 12 for less money. The honest test is the oil analysis trend, not the label.
