What it is

A high-performance extreme-pressure industrial gear lubricant for enclosed gears working under high load and shock load, published in five ISO grades from 100 to 460 — AGMA 3EP through 7EP.

Applications

  • All industrial and mobile equipment needing mild EP gear lubricants
  • Enclosed gear drives and speed reducers, from small gearboxes to large high-power units on metal rolling mills, cement mills, sugar mills and mine hoists
  • Chain cases, sprockets, slide guides and flexible couplings
  • Plain and rolling element bearings

Performance standards it is written against

  • ANSI/AGMA 9005-E02
  • US Steel 224
  • David Brown Table E
  • DIN 51517 Part 3 CLP

What that buys you

  • High load-carrying capacity extends gear life
  • Excellent oxidation resistance supports extended drain intervals
  • Rapid water separation
  • Protection against rust and corrosion

FZG stage 12 and Timken 30 kg — what those two numbers mean on your gearbox

FZG is the scuffing test, run in twelve increasing load stages. A mineral gear oil that fails at stage 8 or 9 will scuff a hardened gear tooth under shock load; stage 12 is the top of the standard test, and every grade here reaches it. Timken OK load is the other half — 30 kg is the film strength under a sliding load, which is what a kiln girth gear or a mill pinion actually sees.

Both figures are why this oil is specified on cement mills, sugar mills, rolling mills and mine hoists rather than a plain circulating oil. The approvals say the same thing formally: DIN 51517 Part 3 CLP, ANSI/AGMA 9005-E02, US Steel 224 and David Brown Table E.

Picking the grade: the AGMA number and the ISO number are the same oil — ISO 220 is AGMA 5EP. Work from the gearbox maker’s plate. If nothing is marked, the oil temperature and the pitch-line speed decide it, and we will size it from the nameplate if you send it.
