How to Choose the Right Hydraulic Oil for Your Equipment

April 13, 2026 · 8 min read · Maintenance Guide

Selecting the correct hydraulic oil is one of the most critical decisions for maintaining equipment reliability and operational efficiency. The wrong choice can lead to premature pump wear, sluggish operation, overheating, and costly downtime. This guide covers the essential factors every maintenance engineer should consider.

Understanding Viscosity Grades

Hydraulic oils are classified by ISO viscosity grades (ISO VG). The most common grades used in industrial applications are ISO VG 32, 46, and 68. The number represents the oil's kinematic viscosity at 40 degrees Celsius in centistokes (cSt). Choosing the right viscosity depends on your operating temperature range, pump type, and system pressure.

For Indian climate conditions, particularly in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh where ambient temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius, ISO VG 46 and VG 68 are most commonly recommended. VG 32 finds application in precision systems operating in temperature-controlled environments.

Pump Compatibility

Different hydraulic pump designs have varying lubrication requirements. Vane pumps require anti-wear (AW) hydraulic oils with zinc-based additives for cam ring protection. Piston pumps, especially at pressures above 250 bar, need oils with excellent shear stability and thermal resistance. Gear pumps are the most forgiving but still benefit from proper viscosity selection.

ISO Cleanliness Codes

Over 80% of hydraulic system failures are attributed to oil contamination. ISO 4406 cleanliness codes (e.g., 16/14/11) specify the acceptable particle count at different micron sizes. Servo-proportional systems typically require ISO 16/14/11 or cleaner, while standard industrial systems operate well at ISO 18/16/13. Investing in proper filtration and monitoring cleanliness levels is more impactful than buying premium oil.
